A video to explain something to our customers or report an anomaly to our developers is the best.

I am using 2 different tools according my mood:

- Jing: Free software, you must install it. Very usefull. It's limited to 5 minutes but usually it's enough for us. Cherry on the cake: You can use it also for picture screenshots! To download it: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

- http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/: As you can see it's a web site. It's using a Java Applet and it's working very well. By the way they propose a desktop version too but I never tried it.
2 advantages: No need to setup anything in your computer (you suppose to have Java already!) and it's limited to 15 minutes.
A pro version is available for very cheap (15 USD) allowing you to edit the video after recording.

For the moment I don't succeed to use Java plugin in Chrome...

I am using Screen2Exe portable version manually installed in Liberkey and for small video (around 10 minutes) I think it is a good tool.

Screen2Exe

You can also use camtasia :

It's free and it's the tool Francois used for PcVue tutorial.

It's Free....trial !!

Camstasia is the reference in term of videocast but, for sure, it's not free.

  • Camtasia is probably the best and the most expensive.
  • screencast-o-matic is nice but I can't record the second screen. It is very long to produce the video, more than 2 minutes for a 3 minutes video. It take 10Mb only with a high quality result.
There is a logo at the bottom left of the final video.
  • Camstudio is a free and open source software which provide a lot of functionnalities and can be used as a portable software (without installation). It is not provided directly by Liberkey but it can be installed on a Liberkey easily.

Since a while I am using also another good one: BB Flashback.
They have a free edition named Express: http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack_FreePlayer.aspx

Of course, Express edition has some limits. See the comparison table: http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBackExpress/CompareEditions.aspx

It's not portable but quite good actually. So, I agree, that having a portable edition is quite good for site intervention.
I will add CamStudio in my Liberkey package.

I tried BB FlashBack and it is working well. Unfortunately with Express version it is not possible to edit the video and add Anotations for example.

Attached is a video to see how to install Camstudio portable on Liberkey and some recommended settings. You can see that it is possible to display screen annotations during the record.
