About Client Modification Lists in the network configuration.

I understand that they are to automate the distribution of variable changes in a networked application.
Can anyone tell me breifly how they work?

Cheers, Robin

Hi Rob and Happy new year to you
Actually this only broadcast the variable change and not the mimic associated to it so its use is very limited. You have an scada basic instruction which forces the station to bradcast its change.
What I advise the customer is to use the version management instead. So maybe direct hilm in the help to this section when he look for broadcast modification.
The main drawback of the version management is that you need to stop the station in order to get the changes but you get all the changes (var, mimic etc).

Yes Manu, but some customers don't want to restart the station...
By the way, what is the Scada Basic instruction you talked about?

Robin, as said by Manu, the broadcast is a feature used for Variables. That's a very important point to highlight.

How it works?
1. Create a Client Modification List including the stations you want to update. Don't select active as PcVUe will automatically update the stations. That action can have dramatic consequences!
2. Create/Modify/Delete a variable in any station.
3. Open Configure/Variables/Broadcast dialog
4. Select on the top the modification you want to broadcast
5. Select the Client Modification in the Combo
6. Click Send button.
7. PcVue opens a dialog with the result.

For the instruction it was a wishfull thinking 😉 Sorry I mixed-up with the scheduler broadcast function.
I agree that some client don't want to stop the station especially for big application.
But I think since we don't have a full solution to broadcast all changes without restarting the application it would be good to point the user to the version control solution as well and let him decide what is best for his need.

Thanks Nico
The mistake I made when trying was to select the list as active. The variable changes are then broadcast immediately - as you say probably not the best way to do it.

I will try your method and use it in the training material.

Cheers

Robin

I tried adding some variables with the "Active" tick box unticked.
There was no automatic update.
But also nothing appears in the Modifications List dialog.
I am using 10.0 SP1. Is it possible that this doesn't work anymore?

Hmmmm, I don't know. Last time I used this feature was with 10.0 Update1 and it worked well.
I suggest you request the help of our support team....

Hi All,
There is an option Jin Chun added some time ago (in version 10.0 SP1)
Could you have a look to advanced settings / Write the MDF.dat in the PER directory
This checkbox is by default unticked.
I think you need to tick it to create the mdf.dat file in the PER directory otherwise this file is not created anymore

Hmm
OK I tried it and it works. But it seems clumsy to first disable the "Active" property in the modification list and then have to enable the "Write mdf.dat..." in another place. Should we really be encouraging customers to do this by putting it in the training materials?

I agree with you that it is not very logical to work like this.
This checkbox was added because we faced an issue where the size of mdf.dat file was so huge that PcVue was crashing.
As variable broadcasting is not very often used by customers, it was quicker not to create anymore this file by default

According to me, it would have been better to limit this file size
