Hi,
For many reasons, it would be good (and we have the freedom to) remove the SQL Server Management Studio from our DVD. Before proceeding, we want your insight
Some of the many reasons are:
- For some times now, SSMS is available as a standalone tool. The current version allows you to manage any SQL Server version, from SQL Server 2008 to the latest 2017 --> Much better than 1 SSMS per SQL Server version.
- The tool can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site (800 Mb).
- It would allow us to reduce the size of the largest PcVue package (reduction of 1 Gb to 2 Gb approx)
Why it has never been a good idea to ship it on our DVD, or why it has never been helpful to users:
- Only in English, anyone willing to use SSMS in his/her own language has forever downloaded it from Microsoft
- Lifecycle: The package on our DVD is always running behind the latest Microsoft's package. Direct download at Microsoft is always up-to-date
A good reason to keep it could be:
"No one downloads the equivalent of the full DVD so its size does not matter, and it is already missing in the Core with extra we are used to download so we know where to get it at Microsoft. 👿 "

I vote for: (1) Removing the SSMS package from the v12 DVD because ...(we don't need it ? / the Full DVD size matters ? any other good reason) (2) Keeping the SSMS package on the v12 DVD because ...
Thank you for your participation.
Hi,
2.
But maybe we can add another choice, available on DVD but not on download package.
Hi,
There is not really something like a "download package" versus a "not downloadable package".
There is a big fat 'fullDVD', 4.5 Gb, available at the Sales Admin dept under the form of a DVD AND available for download.
There is a lighter 'CoreWithExtras', 1.5 Gb, only available via download. This package does not have SQL Server nor SSMS (already).
If I understand your proposal correctly, it corresponds to the reality already. A big fat one and a lighter one.
OK, I understand.
So I confirm, keep on DVD, because sometime Internet connection is not available on site so full DVD with all tools is nice.
Hi
(2) Keeping the SSMS package on the v12 DVD because ...when you have a training to do you don't have to remember to check il you have SQL package with you...If you have to download it from a customer site it could be very long
Hi
I vote for:
(1) Removing the SSMS package from the v12 DVD because it is not PcVue role to provide Microsoft software.(And also package size...)
Thank you for your insight.

Thank you
For my part, my opinion is divided.
As some say, it is not up to us to provide Microsoft software.
And also, when I had to install PcVue at the bottom of a factory with no internet connection, I was really happy to have it on hand.
Hello,
In my opinion, we should remove it because:
- Customer can download it with his the language he is fond of
- more place in our DVD (or file)
- It is not mandatory to provide it
- For trainings, we should always have a version in our own flash disk ou USB drive
Hello,
I'll vote for removing both SQL Server and SSMS.
I add 2 reasons to the list:
- with version 12, we'll officaly suuport Oracle with Universal Connector (aka DBconnect), then we should also provide Oracle furnitures to be consistent
- by not providing SQL Server Express, (I hope) customers may think a bit more on which edition they need instead of using the "default" one, and what it implies to deploy and administrate it
Everybody should/already have on his USB keys/drives a set of tools (Wiresharks, OPC Explorer, ..). The SSMS is just a new one to include.
(1) Removing the SSMS package from the v12 DVD because customer have to be autonomous for the suppling, installation and administration of sql server.
I vote for:
(1) Removing the SSMS package from the v12 DVD because i prefer using always the latest version downloaded from Microsoft site.
Hello,
I agree with you all
Remove the SSMS package.
Don't you think we could provide at least links to the Microsoft website?
I vote for removing SQL Server package but I agree with Gilles to provide at least a link to download the latest Express version (so maybe to create a redirect page under our website like
https://www.pcvuesolutions.com/download_sql
in order to avoid broken links due of Microsoft change in his website).
I'm agree to remove SSMS and SQL Server express from DVD, our customers must download and install them themselves.
