Below is the user's system :
PcVue version is 15.1.4
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC
He said he had this problem intermittently before, and each time restart of the machine would resolve the problem. But now it fails to start completely. Even running Component registration fails because there is an instance of PcVue is running. He could not end the process from Task Manager.
Did anybody encounter this problem before?
I am waiting for some answers from the customer :
[list=1]
To confirm the machine is 64 bit
If he has successfully run PcVue (any version) on this machine before
Any updates were done on this machine (hardware/software update, any new application/antivirus)?
Any other machine with a similar OS on his side that is having this problem
I think it was not running as a service because when he launched PcVue there is a project selection dialog. After that, the UI did not pop up, but the process can be seen in Task Manager. So when he go to Task Manager and kill the process, it remained suspended and could not be killed.
But I will check explicitly with the user to confirm the run mode from Core Management Console.
The user claimed that he had already done repairing, as well as removing and reinstalling the machine, and the issue persists. As for the core management, it is already set to run as a "Desktop Application".
Some answers from the user :
1. It is a 64-bit OS.
2. We have run PcVue 15 other releases before. Now they are running on V15.1.4. The problem began last week, it would occur sometimes when shutting down PcVue, the windows would close except for the PcVue event viewer window which would hang, and stay visible. The program would then be in the suspended mode and it was necessary to restart the computer to use PcVue again. Eventually, it began to happen when starting the program too.
3. There were no updates or additions to the computer, we’re trying to keep a clean environment as this particular machine is just for testing the control system. We do the development work elsewhere.
4. There isn’t any 3rd party virus scan, we’re relying on the built-in Windows security, on the network hardware (I think, but this isn’t my area), and the fact the system is air-gapped.
5. They have an identical machine that does not have this problem.
6. One difference between the machines, and the recent change was that we started using a license dongle on the problem computer, we had been using a network license before that.
I will suggest to the user to see if they could format this machine if it is not too much.
I also will ask him to test again with a network license and see if that solves the problem.
Some updates on this ticket. The last point from the previous reply, the user mentioned one difference from last time to now, is that now they are using a license dongle on the problem computer, whereas it used to be a network dongle before.
I asked him to test again with a blank project and network license to see if the problem is appearing again. He believes the problem could be due to the license dongle. Below are his replies.
Pulling out the dongle causes the program to stop hanging, after which it can be reinserted for the loading of the project.
I’m reverting back to using the network license for our test setup..
Also, one of our engineers on site told me that sometimes the hardware dongle would not read when it was plugged into a KVM, then the project could not be loaded while unlicensed.
It’s possible that this device is interfering with the dongle, bypassing this and plugging directly into the machine solved the problems encountered on site, and hopefully will prevent this suspending problem ever appearing again.
Did anyone have a site using PCIe KVM to connect the dongle and have this issue?
The only possibility I could guess is if the device is located very far from the machine and does not have a good connection, and for some reason, the license dongle information is not transmitted in full. But will that cause a freeze in PcVue startup and eventually a suspended state?
